In Class Assignment
The two articles that I read were The Rwandan Girl Who Refused to Die and a BBC article on the same event in the church. While reading both of these stories I was able to visualize everything the author was saying because of the vivid describing words they used. I felt like I was there seeing what they saw. These articles made me feel utterly devastated and crushed that things like this still happen in our world, I feel that no one should be killed for no reason, everyone has the right to live. These two articles are similar but different at the same time. The first article is from a girl's point of view, the victim. While the second was from a grown man's point of view, the murderer. The authors convey the sense of evil by describing the conditions of the people being killed and of the actions of the murderers. In the second article when the man confessed that he "didn't think he was himself" and that "those people shouldn't have been killed for no reason" I really felt the sense of evil in the article. I think that the true meaning of evil is knowing something is wrong but doing it anyways. I see that because one man thought that killing all the Tutsis would solve the Hutu's problems, the rest of society decided to go along with the plan. I think that the fact that the young girl had lived so long in a church full of rotting hit me the hardest. I think this is because, even though I think I am strong, I don't think I could have survived that like she did. I think she was very strong but I also think that no child should ever have to go through that.

You are seeing the darkness in humnaity as it is expressed through these articles and by what happened in the situation in Rwanda. Your reactions are important as it shows how the authors were able to add impact and you reacted to their writing-that is what a good writer does-generates emotion/reactions in their readers.Keep bringing in specific text to support and explain your thinking. For example what words did the author use and what image did it create for you? Expalin that. Well done.
